Our CEO's Own Journey
Dear Reader,
I was never handed anything on a plate, I needed to work hard to get what I wanted. It is probably the same for you.
My working life started from the humblest of beginnings - flipping burgers. But I took a gamble to move into IT and marketing and I have never looked back.
I wanted to learn from the best, so I continually read guides, how to's and generally anything that the experts of that time produced. I have lost count of how many business books I have read, and my bowing library shelves feel like I have bought every marketing book that was ever written.
But when you want to learn how to do things the proper way, nothing beats being shown what to do.
Back then I would sign up for courses, and that meant travelling to a training centre for 3-5 days. Nowadays, expert knowledge is much more accessible online.
Over the years I have personally helped 100s, if not 1,000s, of clients to be successful. I still smile when I think of those small start-ups who had nothing when we first met, and now they are achieving over £100 million per annum turnover.
In my mind, it is key to learn from someone who has "been there and done that".
That is why I want to share my journey with you. With every tumble I learned even more and I also had the support of many great mentors along the way. Thankfully, there have been more highs than lows.

My Story Part 1
It started with a McDonalds burger then got hot and sweaty
I was sixteen and I wanted a job. That is how it all started.
As weekends go, it started off no different to many others. A friend and I went into town to do some shopping and to grab a bite to eat. McDonalds was the restaurant of choice back then, if you can call McDonalds a restaurant!
But this weekend was different, it changed my life.

Transforming a betting company, who weren’t a betting company, and getting my first shares
I never did meet Texas Tom, the man behind the cheesy TV commercials, but I did meet an ex-Burger King manager.
That was the start of my journey to convert a gambling company into a supermarket.

A big gamble, yes it was.
The day I woke up and decided to end a £52,000 per year job and a safe career path for a £6,000 gamble.
Back then, I was performing digital marketing before Google was even created.

Chris Evans (the TV presenter) had just sold his company for £225 million. I was at the forefront of the internet revolution. Money was abundant and I thought I had hit the big time!
I was helping global brands expand on the web and boosting their sales, and to top it off, £18,000 of shares were gifted to me.

Being headhunted to grow Microsoft, drinking Guinness and eating crisps
When someone throws money at you to come and help grow some of the biggest brands in the world, and tells you that you can drink guinness and eat crisps at the same time - I had to join.
This was an awakening. I can still recall those days as if it were yesterday.
In part 5, I will share my experiences of working in one of the worlds largest integrated marketing agencies.

Turning a two man business into a big player - a success and a failure, and losing my shares
The morning that I woke up and knew that I was resigning. I decided I was going to go from Europe's No.1 marketing agency to an unknown firm.

In my heart I was going back to my roots, back to helping smaller companies.

Turning a new chapter, hitting the big time and making £millions
Call it fate, call it whatever you want, to me it was a new chapter. After losing all my money, I had a lifeline, but it was hard work. Nothing in life is easy.
Little did I know how much of a transformation was required. But I grasped it with both hands and worked days, nights and weekends to turn things around.
Turnover jumped £millions. Massive profits put a smile on the shareholders faces.

Becoming an overnight millionaire, here is how it should have happened
"You will be an overnight millionaire" - that is what I was told when I first met the owner.
"We have a big USA company looking to buy us, come and transform the business. Sort out the operations, use all your marketing knowledge to grow the business online and you will be rich" - who wouldn't jump at an opportunity like that.

Going backwards to move forwards. Generating 1,000,000s of visitors and making everyone big bucks
So I was going back, but where had all my old staff gone and where were the clients? They had all left.
Suddenly, everything I had learned over the years was now invaluable. For the first time in my life, I was actually prepared and knew exactly what was needed.
By simply applying my marketing knowledge, we won new client after new client. Our expertise took clients from 100s of web visitors to millions. Their sales rocketed as a result.
